Course Templates and In-services

Estimated Time To Read This: 2 – 3 minutes

In-service. Class. Workshop. Event. Conference. Session. Whatever you name it, the foundation needs to be planned through the creation of a course template.  Though the nomenclature is similar, there is sometimes confusion between a course and an in-service in PD Place.

COURSE: Music Appreciation
IN-SERVICE: April 18, Room ABC, 9:00AM-12:00PM
IN-SERVICE: August 19, Room XYZ, 1:00PM-4:00PM

A course, also referred to as a course template, is the foundation upon which your in-services are built upon.  Within the course template, the title, description and category are outlined along with other optional properties including skills required, prerequisites and qualifications.  These are the details that define your course, however no dates, times or locations are associated.

These specifics are identified in the course’s in-service, an instance of the course which can be created within the course template by clicking the Add a new In-service link at the top of the course page.  In addition to identifying the time, date and location, the in-service will also contain references to the instructor, target groups, class size, costs, and many more details that are unique to each individual in-service.  (Not to worry, duplicating in-services is as easy as clicking a button and adjusting the details you need.)  It is not possible to have an in-service without a course template to reference.  Putting these concepts together, you could have a course called “Music Appreciation” while the in-services for this course will run on April 18th in room ABC and again on August 19th room XYZ. Once the course template is created, you’ll be able to create multiple in-services based on it.  And if any changes are required within the course template (e.g. changing the description to reflect an updated curriculum), the changes will be reflected in all related in-services afterwards.
