Creating A Welcome Environment For New Employees

Estimated Time To Read This: 3 – 4 minutes

Hi I’m Kyle and I’m new. The prospect of starting a new job is always very intimidating; no matter how qualified you are for the position. Questions arise like with whom can I align myself, who will help me get to where I want to be and who may inhibit my climb up the corporate ladder? It is very easy to get lost in the shuffle, especially when you come from a different industry. Learning new products and processes while dealing with the aforementioned challenges can really weigh heavily on your stress level. For this reason it is always a huge relief and a breath of fresh air when companies take time to appreciate its employees and build team morale close to the time a new hire starts. This makes us “newbies” feel welcome and like “this company is about more than just the paycheque. They are committed to their employees.”

CoreSolutions recently held one of these events.

The only thing better then a pancake breakfast is a FREE pancake breakfast with real maple syrup, prepared by your executive team. For some reason I find food tastes better when it’s prepared by someone else. I refuse to admit that this is because I am a terrible cook. The pancake breakfast served as a great reason to talk to and get to know my fellow coworkers. Of course there was so much food that I could have easily also had a pancake lunch but there was a twist to this day. A cookie baking competition/sampling would make it so that pancakes at lunch were not a possibility.

Chocolate Chip

The staff was invited to bake their best cookies and while the competition had no prize, bragging rights would be awarded to the victor…which is motivation enough for me. The varieties of cookies were as plentiful as they were delicious. Chocolate Chip, Coconut and Jam, Double Chocolate and Nut – topped with Sugar, I think strategically prepared to make sure that I was to have a sugar crash in the afternoon.

The winning recipe a toffee and shortbread concoction was supplied by our CFO. While this recipe was borrowed from Robin Hood Flour, some justification for the win could be explained as “Can’t go wrong with Caramel” (CoreSolutions Employee). Want to see the recipe?

At the end of this all, it seems that I learned a great deal about the other employees and management team. I also feel like I am a welcomed addition to this organization and am looking forward to making an impactful mark here.

Making sure that new employees feel welcome should be a priority of any company as hiring and turnover are very costly. Creating an environment where new employees are encouraged to meet with their fellow coworkers will add to their satisfaction and loyalty to the organization. The quicker we feel like we belong and we can trust those around us, the more willing we are to jump into our responsibilities head first. Motivation isn’t always about the paycheque – sometimes a little food, competition, and to know you are appreciated is enough.

Do you have a fun welcome/initiation for new employees? What is your favourite new job experience? Let me know!
