Packing for the family’s north-bound cottage vacation last week, my company laptop was part of the “stuff” that we had to squeeze into the trunk. My husband, who also brought his, understood and just packed my laptop along with everything else. That’s the way it has been for years in our house, even with my daughter saying, “Mom, you’re on vacation, leave it home.” Like most things I got my way, and the laptop sure helped with the long drive along the stretches of highways 401, 400 and 11.
Whether it was before everyone was awake, while I was having my morning coffee, or just taking a break from sitting on the beach, quickly checking my in-box kept me in tune with what was happening at the office. In some cases, it was just a matter of reading my emails to keep on top of things, and either filing or deleting messages; in other instances, I was able to respond, which hopefully made others’ lives a little easier, as they were able to receive an answer to a question and move on with their day. It’s always appreciated when you don’t have to wait a week for an answer, right?
So, what’s my point, you ask.
While we all need our away time, sometimes staying connecting with the office while on holiday is a good thing. I can now return from vacation to an in-box of very few emails. Life will be good come Monday morning!
The challenge is BALANCE. All work and no play, as they say, isn’t good. But lots of play and a little work is o.k. while on vacation.
