FileMaker Go is proving to be a great little app that is expanding the office even further than it already has been with smartphones. Now I can access our company/client data regardless of my physical location and can even add notes and new records. The possibilities are endless for potential use for nearly every organization out there. From checking inventory in a warehouse to adding sales notes while at a client’s location and everything in between.
So what was I most excited about when I purchased FileMaker Go? My password database
If you are like me you probably have many websites and companies that you do business with online. From Amazon to Zurich your web access is restricted only by your ability to recall what you used as a username and password when you created your account 4 years ago (to buy that workout DVD you SWORE you were going to get up at 5am every morning to do). Since I don’t think it is safe practice to use the same username and password for everything it has resulted in me trying to remember (at present count) 35 different ones. That doesn’t even take into consideration the other things I need to remember such as encryption keys for wireless routers, alarm pass-phrases and, most importantly, my mother’s password for her email account.
I created a very basic FileMaker database to keep track of all of these different things rather than rely on my feeble memory but it always required access to my laptop where my database was stored (password-protected obviously – the password to which is kept in another password-protected FileMaker database in Zurich).
Then with FileMaker Go I was granted the ability to truly have my password database with me no matter where I was (although after an unfortunate incident in the shower I do limit my need for knowledge).
Without even doing anything to my database I was able to call it up on my iPhone and recall my username for my eBay account (crazeeeduuuuude514276) and have it display like this:

Then with what amounted to no more than 3 minutes of work I was able to improve the look slightly so it was a little more pleasing on the eye (my eyes at least – I can’t speak for yours).

The important thing to remember here is that I am not even a developer. What I know about development could be written on the back of a postage stamp even if you used slightly bigger letters than you usually would. Just imagine what one of our FileMaker Certified developers could design for you… come to think of it – just think what they could do for me with my password database!
Regardless of the type of business you are in, having your data at your fingertips is going to give you a head start over your competitor and FileMaker Go is a great way to leverage that.
