Importing Custom Functions in FileMaker

Estimated Time To Read This: 2 – 3 minutes

Remember the old days, before FileMaker Pro 11, where you had to copy custom functions from one file to another by creating a new custom function and then copying all the code and parameters manually? (That was a even pain to type out, let alone perform!) This was extremely time consuming, especially in older projects where all tables had their own files.

FileMaker added a neat new feature to their latest version that some of you may not know of. Keep reading…

On the File>Manage>Custom Functions… dialog, there is a new button entitled ‘Import.’ If you click this button, you will be prompted to select the file from which you want to import the new Custom Function.

After selecting the file, you will be presented with a window containing all the Custom Functions available in that file. Put a checkmark beside the one(s) you want and click OK.

Once the Custom Functions are imported, an Import Summary will be displayed. Make sure that there are no conflicts or errors. Some Custom Functions have dependencies that you need to import for them to work properly.

You can now see that the Custom Function was imported without having to open it up and make any modifications to it.

If there are any other FileMaker Pro 11 features you’d like our development team to explore in our CoreFM blog, let us know in the comments!
