I know it’s hard to believe, but before we know it the Holiday Season will be here. Between now and then, our daily routines and schedules continue, but we now have the added stress of getting ready for that “one” day. I try and follow some tips I’ve received from friends and family, or have learned myself over the years. I am sure you have some you could add to the following list.
- Holiday Shopping: Start early. (Remember this for next time.) There are always sales on; you don’t have to wait until December to get the good deals. Starting in September, I keep my eye open for those special gifts that I want to give to loved ones. My goal is to have all my shopping done for December 1. It took some practise, but for the most part I do accomplish this.
- Lists, lists, and more lists. My family laughs at me: I have a shopping list for each person. This tip applies to other scenarios too. I keep a dinner party list for those friends we are having over during the holidays, a grocery list to ensure I have everything needed for the meal, and a budget. I keep everything organized, and each time I buy something I check it off a list. Plus I do a status update every week to see how close I am to completing my to-do lists.
- Plan, and well in advance. If I can make something ahead of time and freeze it, I do. I want to enjoy my holidays with family and friends, and want to spend as little time in the kitchen as possible.
- Since I host Christmas day, I ask for help. I’m not afraid to ask someone to bring an appetizer or dessert. This took me a while to do, since I like to be in control. I eventually realized everything does not have to be perfect (in my eyes) to be memorable.
- I take time for me. I do not do any shopping or planning on Friday nights. This is my night to sit back and not think about all the hustle and bustle. It really helps! Oh, did I mention, I’ll also have a glass or two of my favourite wine.
There is so much to do and to organize, but at the end of the day it all somehow manages to get done. It took me a long time to come to terms with “It doesn’t have to be perfect.” What really matters is being together with family and friends.
Feel free to share your holiday tips to help us all get through this busy season!
