In FileMaker Pro 9 one of the major changes was a non-modal dialog for scripts and script editing. Along with that was the ability to put scripts in folders. Now in FileMaker Pro 11, that ability has been extended to layouts.
An improved Manage Layouts dialog allows the developer to create folders of layouts as well as separators (appear as lines separating layout names). It also allows the developer to edit the layout options, show/hide in layout menus, re-order layouts, as well as duplicate and delete them. And, like the Manage Scripts dialog, you can filter the list of layouts by folder and by searching the name; very handy for files with a lot of layouts.
If a file that has layout folders is opened by a previous version of FileMaker, the folder will appear as a blank layout with the group’s name and associated with the table occurrence of the layout you were on when the folder was created.
By nesting folders within folders and exposing the layout names to the user using the Status Toolbar, the developer has a quick navigation tool that is more intuitive to the user than a flat list. That makes layout folders a win-win for developers and users alike!
