PD Place™ Portal Buttons

Estimated Time To Read This: 2 – 3 minutes

Today I’ll elaborate on PD Place™ portal button functionality, which allows for seamless integration between PD Place and another internal website within your organization.

Issue

Previously, a number of clients have required seamless integration between PD Place and their internal website.  This meant that they required:

  • The user to access the internal website from PD Place itself.
  • The user  to access that site without the need to re-enter their credentials.

Solution

To satisfy these requirements, the “Portal Button” functionality was developed.  Essentially this is a button that appears near the top-right hand corner of the application once a user logs in (button circled in blue):

When the button is clicked, a new browser window pops up, connecting the user to their organization’s internal website.  Here’s an example:

The test internal website in this case has already been provided with the necessary information to successfully identify the user, without that user having to re-enter their credentials!

How it works

The logic for providing the user-related information to the internal website is custom-developed within the PD Place installation itself. The custom-developed logic for the portal button will have at its disposal information about the user currently logged-in to PD Place, such as their first and last name.  That information can then be used to generate a URL to the internal website, complete with any necessary user-related information that it may require.

Please note: The custom logic for any portal button can be quite involved due to the complexity of the interaction between PD Place and any other website.  Any work on developing the logic is considered a PD Place custom solution, and will fall outside the scope of the PD Place annual support contract.
