Professional Development: More than what I bargained for

Estimated Time To Read This: 2 minutes

Many of us set personal and professional goals for ourselves revolving around our careers.  Not only is it satisfying to be able to tell family and friends what your new (and most likely improved) job title is, but it’s the challenge and chance to learn and grow that really motivates me.

Recently I accomplished a career goal, one I set for myself last summer when I first joined the CoreSolutions team, as I was promoted from Inside Sales Representative to Account Manager.  Anyone starting a new position recognizes there will be learning and growth opportunities involved as they face new procedures, documentation, and product/service knowledge. Knowing I had new skills to learn, I signed up for a one-day course at Fanshawe College on Value Selling.

We were a small, diverse group that day, as some were new to sales and others, tenured sales professionals looking to brush up on skills. What we all had in common, though, was the desire to grow professionally. This was great encouragement for me, learning that no matter what the experience level, no one has all the answers and we can all benefit from refreshing our professional skills from time to time.

I think it’s safe to say this professional development experience was more than worth the time and cost.  I really learned the value of professional development and encourage everyone to seek out learning opportunities where and whenever possible.

What have your experiences been with professional development?  What PD activities do you participate in and how often?  I’d love to hear your thoughts, so let me know in the comments!
