Estimated Time To Read This: 2 – 3 minutes
I’ve just installed the WordPress app (v 1.5.1) on my mobile phone (Android), and am quite impressed with it.
It took no longer than a few minutes to have fully set up. Initially it didn’t work for me, but that was because of a simple setting that was not yet set in my WordPress installation. You’ll need to be an administrator in order to change that setting, and if you are, then you can simply put a checkmark in the box beside “XML – RPC” to get it to work. This setting can be found under Settings/Writing. Once that was enabled, the rest was a snap. The only other information you’re going to need is your website’s address, and your username and password. If you’re going to use statistics, you’ll also need to know the username and password for your WordPress.com account.
The application itself will launch to a listing of blogs that you’ve set up accounts for. That screen will also let you get into general preferences for the app. This is mostly for notifications –> For example, I can receive a notification that will vibrate my phone any time a new comment gets added to one of my WordPress sites, and I can tell my phone to check for new comments every 5 minutes.
Clicking into one of the blogs that you’ve defined will bring you to a new screen that’s divided into four sections (There’s a screenshot from each one of these 4 sections in the gallery below). Each of these sections will show you information in reverse chronoloical order (with the exception of statistics which is a filtered list). As you can see from the screenshots, the screens you’ll have access to are: comments, posts, pages, statistics.
As I had expected, the app provides only basic functionality. If you had gone to great lengths to customize your edit post screen to include extra metaboxes etc… then you shouldn’t expect that those kinds of changes will show up when editing posts from the mobile app. Nor can you work with any custom post types just yet. At least if you can, I haven’t yet discovered how to. It is however, extremely easy to type up your posts in the editor, categorize them, and even add media to them.
FYI: This post was written using the mobile App
