Device, Device, Device – An Age of Responsive Web Design
Today while visiting a website on my smartphone, I noticed an issue that seems to be very common nowadays. When I visit a website on my smartphone and it is not optimized for mobile devices, I really get peeved (showing my age with that word).
I mean who has time to pinch and zoom these days?? According to my relentless research (i.e. clicked on the first article that showed up on Google), mobile access is growing in leaps and bounds. It is up 394% since December of 2010. I am definitely not a math-magician, but those numbers are impressive. (SearchEngineLand.com)
This gave me the inspiration for this blog post. Reiterating the thoughts of William Saffire of the New York Times, just as “There are three things that matter in property: location, location, location” (Location, Location, Location), there are also three things that matter in web design: Device, Device, Device.
Because there are so many options available for people to access information (whether it be customers, consumers or employees), it is important that your website is presented with a seamless cross-platform design. People viewing your website want to be able to view it on their desktop, tablet or smartphone (Device, Device, Device) and have the same overall experience. That means minimal resizing and panning across as many devices that your website may be viewed on.
Luckily, there is a word for that experience – Responsive.
